Nkokɔ Nketenkete Project Will Be Probed When Bawumia Becomes President In 2029 — Awal Mohammed

Awal Mohammed, a member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) National Communications Team, has criticised the government's implementation of the Nkokɔ Nketenkete programme, alleging that hundreds of millions of cedis have been spent with little to show for the investment. He added that Dr Mahamudu Bawumia would investigate the project if he becomes president in 2029.

In a Facebook post shared on July 9, 2026, Awal Mohammed claimed that although the initiative was introduced to reduce Ghana's dependence on imported poultry and create sustainable livelihoods, its objectives had largely been undermined by poor implementation.

He noted that the programme was outlined on page 59 of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) 2024 manifesto as an intervention to support poultry production by providing birds and feed to rural women to enable them to generate income through the sale of eggs and poultry.

"GH¢344.9 million spent on the Nkoko Nkitinkiti project in the last 18 months with no results to show," he wrote.

According to Awal Mohammed, the 2025 Budget allocated GH¢100 million for the pilot phase of the programme, while the 2026 Budget provided additional funding. He added that on June 3, 2026, the Ministry of Finance confirmed the release of GH¢244.9 million for the initiative, bringing the total expenditure to GH¢344.9 million.

He further claimed that despite government plans to distribute three million birds to help reduce poultry imports, the programme largely benefited NDC constituency executives rather than ordinary citizens and commercial poultry farmers, many of whom, he said, continue to complain about a lack of support.

Awal Mohammed also referenced recent remarks by the Minister for Food and Agriculture, Eric Opoku, before Parliament's Assurance Committee, where the minister disclosed that some beneficiaries had slaughtered and consumed the birds instead of rearing them for commercial purposes.

"He revealed that a lot of the beneficiaries have simply slaughtered and consumed the birds. He specifically mentioned that NDC beneficiaries were sending him videos of their chicken parties," Awal Mohammed stated.

The revelation defeats the programme's original purpose and questioned reports that government is considering distributing birds to Members of Parliament to encourage poultry farming.

He also likened the initiative to the controversial guinea fowl project implemented under the Savannah Accelerated Development Authority (SADA) during President John Mahama's previous administration.

He concluded by stating: “Trust me, in 2029, when Dr Bawumia is sworn in as President of Ghana, the Nkokɔ Nketenkete project will be one of the top initiatives to be investigated for causing financial loss to the state, insha’Allah.
