A serious security scare happened at the Accra High Court on Friday when a well-known criminal escaped while still in handcuffs.
The man, identified as Daniel Obeng, has been serving time for robbery but was brought to court for a new case involving a violent robbery that happened last year in the Madina area.
According to witnesses, Daniel Obeng was waiting for his hearing in the court holding cells. Suddenly, he managed to flee from the highly secured court compound in broad daylight.
He reportedly jumped over the back fence of the court, an area believed to be tightly guarded and under close watch by security officers.
People around the court were shocked to see the escape happen so easily, especially because Obeng was still handcuffed.
Security officers from the Ghana Prisons Service who brought him to court are now under strict investigation. It is unclear how a prisoner in handcuffs could get past the guards and the high court’s security walls without being stopped.
The court’s rear gate leads to a dense neighborhood where it is believed Daniel Obeng hid after his escape.
The police and prison officers have now set up checkpoints and are searching the area to find him.
Obeng was being tried for a 2024 armed robbery case where he allegedly attacked and injured a man named Joseph Tetteh in Madina.
Before this escape, Daniel Obeng had been sentenced to 25 years for earlier robbery crimes, but the court reduced his sentence recently, which allowed him to appear for a new case.
The Ghana Prisons Service has not yet made an official statement about the escape, but the public has expressed worry about the security failure.
A senior court official said this incident raises many questions about the safety measures at the court and the handling of prisoners during trials.
This is not the first time a prisoner has escaped from court in Ghana, but the fact that Obeng was still handcuffed has made this case even more surprising.
Authorities have promised to increase security and bring Daniel Obeng back to court as soon as possible.
The public is urged to report any information that could lead to his capture.
