Deputy CEO of the Ghana Tourism Authority, Abeiku Santana, has shared a fascinating story about Ghana’s first President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, and a river that many believe holds spiritual power.
Speaking in an interview on Okay FM, Santana claimed that every president of Ghana has bathed in a river located behind the childhood home of Dr. Nkrumah.
He made this revelation while promoting the upcoming NkrumahFest, an event designed to celebrate the life and achievements of the country’s founding father.
According to Santana, the river’s mystery dates back to Nkrumah’s childhood. He narrated that when Nkrumah’s mother once fetched water from the river, the young Nkrumah told her she was standing on a fish.
To her surprise, she found a fish exactly where he pointed. This story has since strengthened the belief that Nkrumah was extraordinary and that the water around him carried spiritual significance.
“The people of Nzema strongly believe that Kwame Nkrumah was not an ordinary person. That is why they see the river as miraculous. Over the years, everyone who has become President of Ghana has visited that river to bathe,” Santana explained.
He further highlighted how Nkrumah’s achievements continue to spark wonder.
For instance, by 1935, Nkrumah had already traveled to the United States at age 26, even though Ghana (then the Gold Coast) had no American embassy or easy communication systems.
Santana questioned how Nkrumah managed to build strong networks abroad, influence African Americans, and even meet U.S. President John F. Kennedy.
“These are mysteries about him that people still don’t fully understand. Nkrumah’s life was not just political; it carried elements that seemed almost supernatural,” he added.
Santana noted that the NkrumahFest would give Ghanaians an opportunity to learn more about Nkrumah’s extraordinary journey, his leadership, and the deep cultural beliefs surrounding him.
