I am An Asante Man But This Must Be Discouraged By All Well-Meaning Asantes - Kofi Osei

Prominent businessman and member of the Ashanti community, Kofi Osei, has raised concerns about the royal security team operating around the Manhyia Palace.

In a statement posted on his official Facebook page, Osei argued that no unofficial paramilitary or quasi-security group should operate in the name of protecting Asanteman.

He warned that history shows how groups that assume security functions outside Ghana’s constitutional framework can contribute to fear, political intimidation, division, and instability.

According to Osei, Asanteman remains a highly respected traditional institution with considerable cultural authority and does not require military-style groups to reinforce its status or command public respect.

He pointed out that Ghana already has legally established security agencies mandated to protect citizens irrespective of ethnicity, religion, or political affiliation.

Osei expressed particular concern about the use of uniforms, military-style formations, and similar displays, saying such activities could carry implications beyond cultural or ceremonial purposes.

He cautioned that in Ghana’s politically sensitive environment, such displays could be misunderstood, exploited, or potentially contribute to tensions.

He also warned against allowing private security structures linked to ethnic identities or traditional institutions to become normalized. In his view, arrangements that appear harmless at first could eventually grow beyond effective control.

Osei said commitment to Asanteman should instead be demonstrated through education, economic and social development, unity, cultural preservation, and responsible leadership rather than through the creation of parallel security structures.

He further urged the Interior Minister to intervene promptly and prevent the arrangement from becoming operational, regardless of the intentions of those behind it.

Osei ultimately called for the security structure to be abolished, arguing that it does not serve the interests of Asanteman.
