Former Finance Minister Adam Amin has advised President John Mahama to focus on policies that will leave a strong legacy, just like former President Nana Akufo-Addo did with the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) program.
Mr. Amin made the comments on during an interview with reporters in Tamale. He urged the president not to get caught up in politics and short-term praise but to make decisions that will positively affect the country for generations.
"President Akufo-Addo may have made mistakes, but one thing no one can take away from him is Free SHS," Amin said.
"It changed lives. That is the kind of legacy we want from every president. Mahama should do the right thing and focus on something that will impact the future."
Mr. Amin served under the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government and is known for speaking his mind on national issues. He said Ghana needs policies that benefit ordinary citizens, especially the youth.
“The youth are watching,” he added.
“They want jobs, they want education, and they want hope. The current administration must not waste this chance to make history.”
President Mahama, who returned to power earlier this year after a hotly contested election, has promised to focus on job creation, industrial growth, and healthcare.
His government recently launched the “One District, One Health Centre” project, aiming to improve health access in rural communities.
But critics say more needs to be done. Some civil society groups have urged the government to also review and strengthen the Free SHS policy rather than abandon or weaken it.
In response to Mr. Amin’s comments, Deputy Information Minister Ama Mensima said President Mahama is focused on long-term development.
“We welcome constructive advice,” she said.
“The President is working hard to leave behind a legacy of transformation.”
Political analyst Kojo Mensah says legacy-building takes time and bold choices.
“If Mahama wants to be remembered like Akufo-Addo, he must choose a flagship policy and stick to it,” he noted.
As Ghana faces economic challenges, many citizens are hoping the current administration will invest in projects that last beyond their time in office.
Mr. Amin concluded by saying, “President come and go, but their legacies remain. It’s time to think beyond politics.”
