NPP Youth Leader Warns Against Dropping Bawumia for 2028 Elections, Told What Will Happen If They Do

A youth leader of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has urged members to continue supporting Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as the party’s presidential candidate for the next elections.

Kidiyar Albert, known among party supporters as “Shuga,” who serves as the NPP Youth Organiser for Nkwanta North, believes that replacing Dr. Bawumia now would be a serious mistake that could keep the party in opposition for many years.

According to Shuga, no presidential candidate in Ghana’s history has won the presidency on their first attempt.

He explained that if the NPP chooses a new candidate and loses the next election, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) would likely rule for two full terms, meaning the NPP might wait up to 12 years before returning to power.

“This is a political reality we cannot ignore,” Shuga said.

“Dr. Bawumia has the vision, experience, and leadership skills to unite our party and give us the best chance of winning. Changing him now will only hurt our chances.”

He reminded members of the party’s history of standing by its candidates through multiple campaigns. He pointed to the examples of past leaders such as Adu Boahen, John Agyekum Kufuor, and Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, who all had several runs before winning the presidency.

Shuga insisted that loyalty to a candidate is one of the NPP’s strongest traditions.

“We must give Dr. Bawumia the same support we gave our past leaders. If we truly want to return to power quickly, he is our best hope,” he added.

His comments come at a time when some NPP members have begun calling for a change in leadership.

Recently, a group of youth organisers collected nomination forms for the party’s former flagbearer, showing growing grassroots support for his return.

Political observers say the debate over whether to keep or replace Dr. Bawumia will likely become one of the key discussions ahead of the party’s national delegates conference.
